You Don't Have To Drink That Nasty Glucose Drink!

I opted out of the glucose tolerance test. The GTT is a screening test for gestational diabetes. You do it in a fasted state and drink a high glucose drink and then have your blood taken every hour for 3 hours. I have a real problem with this test! Mostly because this is not an accurate measurement of how my body typically responds after eating. 1.) because I’m not drinking artificial sugar in a fasted state (so who knows how my body will respond). 2.) and after I eat rarely do I sit for 3 hours! Like most people, I’m up walking around, working or doing something active. It just doesn’t make sense to me to take this screening test when it’s not an accurate depiction of my normal diet and lifestyle. Not to mention, I’ve been so nauseated this pregnancy that the thought of ingesting that nasty a$$ drink in a fasted state made me sick just thinking of it!
So I’ve chosen to screen myself by testing my blood sugar levels upon waking in the morning, and an hour after breakfast, lunch and dinner. I want to stay below 130 an hour after eating.
Moral of the story: there are options when it comes to your health and the care you are receiving. If something doesn’t feel right or make sense to you, ask questions, ask for other options, research. Be your own advocate! #pregnancy #glucosetolerancetest #gtt #informedconsent #midwiferycare
